ATTLEBORO - The home for the North Attleboro and Bishop Feehan hockey teams was ordered closed this week because of mold.
Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported on Thursday and Friday that two of the smaller of the three ice rinks at the New England Sports Village had to be closed after black mold was spotted by some users of the rinks.
Stephen Peterson reported the health department inspected the rinks, spotted the mold and ordered them closed.
The problem was traced to dehumidifiers that weren’t functioning properly, the department told the newspaper.
Black mold is known to cause respiratory problems and other health issues. While it’s considered no more dangerous than other types of mold, exposure to black mold can cause some people to experience allergy symptoms and may lead to more serious complications in people with underlying health conditions, health officials said.
“The owners have been working on fixing the issue and cleaning the mold that resulted from that situation," Deputy Health Agent Sheri Miller-Bedau tod the newspaper. “We are awaiting documentation from the mold mitigation company and air quality samples."
She added the results of those samples should be available by the weekend.
