SMITHFIELD, RI - A 20-year-old local man who was killed in an accident in Smithfield, Rhode Island, graduated from North Attleboro High School in 2023.
Austin Dean died in a head-on collision on Monday.
He was on the NAHS wrestling and football teams and was a co-captain on the wrestling team.
Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported in Wednesday’s edition that Smithfield Police responded about 5:30 p.m. to the area of 777 Putham Pike (Route 44) for a reported crash involving a car and a truck.
Dean was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with critical injuries.
He suffered serious lacerations and later died at the hospital, officials said.
Dean was the driver of the truck, which police said had crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming car.
A driver and a juvenile passenger in the car were taken to Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
The car sustained heavy front-end damage. The accident is under investigation by police.
