NORTH ATTLEBORO - The town council approved a special zoning district required of Massachusetts cities and town hosting or near MBTA train stations during their semi-monthly meeting Monday night.
The MBTA Communities Act is intended to encourage multi-unit housing.
State officials hope the overlay districts will lead to more affordable housing.
The vote was 6-0 in favor of setting aside 38 continguous acres and another 37 acres on Route 1, three councilors missed the meeting.
While there were no votes against the measure, members made it clear they weren’t happy with the state’s mandate.
