BOSTON - Local elections took a back seat to Tuesday’s presidential election and Donald Trump’s return to the oval office.
Unlike the race at the top of the ballot, however, those already in office prevailed.
State Representative Adam Scanlon will return for a third term after easily defeating Republican challenger David Cannata.
Scanlon received 8,453 votes to Cannata’s 5,664 completing a sweep by winning in North Attleboro, precinct 3B in Attleboro and precincts 1, 2A and 5 in Mansfield.
The 28-year-old has never lost an election, having won a seat won the North Attleboro school committee while still an NAHS student, he was then elected to the first town council election and now has won three terms serving as the representative for the 14th Bristol District.
Wrentham resident and former North Attleboro football standout Marcus Vaughn was also a winner.
The Republican state representative will be back on Beacon Hill for a second term after defeating Democrat Kevin Kalkut 11,434 votes to 7,954.
The 38-year-old swept the towns in the district: Plainville, hWrentham, Kalkut’s hometown of Norfolk, the lone precinct in Walpole, two precincts in Medfield and one in Millis.
Republicans have held the 9th Norfolk District seat since 1992.
