NORTH ATTLEBORO - The school department issued a statement Wednesday about damage to the artificial turf at the high school's Beaupre Field.
"Dear Community Members, Yesterday, May 4, 2021, Geosurfaces was able to assess the damages on the turf field and has determined there is a depression in the field base stone."
"The damage to the field base stone was transferred through the shock pad and the turf surfacing."
"In total, there are 17 areas that are in need of repair."
"In the areas that are damaged/compressed we must open up the turf, redistribute the stone base material to meet appropriate planarity and then the shock pad will have to be replaced."
"Geosurfaces is in the process of preparing a proposal and timeline to complete the work of repairing the damages on the field."
"Once the district receives the timeline we will be sure to notify the community of all anticipated dates."
"Thank you for your patience as we work to get this community asset repaired."
"Sincerely, North Attleborough Public Schools."
The damage occurred when members of the high school’s football team lifted weights on the surface during the summer. The weight room in the high school was closed due to COVID-19.
The field was deemed unplayable late last month.
The news, first announced at the April 26 meeting of the town council, was the first topic when members of the school committee met Monday night in the lower level conference room at town hall.
The school department’s attorney, Joe Bartulis, addressed members about the liability the district faces if the field is open.
Luke McCoy, a representative of Kessel/Boos, designers of the field, explained the steps that have been taken to date and what may have to be done to repair the divots.
