Fire razes group home in downtown

NORTH ATTLEBORO - An early morning fire Wednesday (June 3) at 174 North Washington Street forced nine people into the night.

The three-alarm fire was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. and the house was fully engulfed by the time firefighters made the short trip from their Elm Street headquarters.

The Sun Chronicle reported that the Victorian house is one of three sober residences for people recovering from alcoholism run by the Association for Sober Living.

Fire Chief Chris Coleman told North TV on Thursday that the home's residents evacuated safely and were waiting outside when the first fire engine arrived.

Officials later determined the structure could not be salvaged and was demolished less than 13 hours after the 911 call was received.

The fire spread to an adjacent house at 170 North Washington Street. Although there was damage to its north side, firefighters were able to save the structure from extensive damage.
