Man shot in face in North Attleboro

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The victim of a shooting late Monday night at the Hampton Inn & Suites on Draper Avenue was a 61-year-old man who isn’t believed to be the intended target, authorities say.

Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported first responders found the victim, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his face, in the lobby of the hotel. That announcement was made by the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

“Intitial investigation has revealed the 61-year-old male victim was not the intended target,” said Jennifer Sowa, an assistant district attorney.

Stephen Peterson reported in Friday’s edition of the paper the victim was described as conscious and alert when taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

The injuries were nonlife-threatening, the DA’s office said.

Police and ambulance personnel responded around 10 p.m. to the hotel just off Route 1 behind the Appleby’s Restaurant.

Police put up yellow crime scene tape inside and outside the hotel and used a police dog and flashlights to search the area.

There appeared to be a hole in a glass window that may have been caused by a bullet. It was covered with cardboard.

Hotel guests reported hearing multiple shots that they said sounded like fireworks.

Another ambulance was called to the hotel for someone who was suffering an anxiety attack, fire officials said. That person was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

Hotel management has declined to comment about the incident.

Local police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the DA’s office are investigating the shooting, the DA’s office said, declining further comment.
