NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Emerald Square mall was temporarily closed on Sunday, February 16 after the fire department found water leaking through the roof into electrical fixtures and other areas on the top floor.
Fire Chief Christopher Coleman said in a social media post last Sunday that firefighters found the leak after receiving notifications of a fire alarm activation at the Route 1 mall at about 1:30 p.m.
Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported the fire alarm had been activated by water leaking through a detector, he said.
Upon further investigation, firefighters identified several areas throughout the mall where water was leaking from the roof, affecting lighting fixtures and the men’s and women’s restrooms on the third floor, Coleman said.
Firefighters, with the assistance of an electrical inspector, isolated power in several locations.
A health inspector also responded to the scene, and the building inspector was notified.
The mall reopened Monday morning after Coleman lifted the temporary closure.
He said fire officials, along with local inspectors, met with mall management for a walk-through at about 9:30 a.m.
“During the meeting, mall management presented several mitigation measures to town officials and outlined future plans to address water leaks,” Coleman said.
