NORTH ATTLEBORO - Members of the town council Wednesday night (June 10) expressed their support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
It was the first meeting of the town's legislative body since high school students organized a demonstration in front of town hall the previous week (June 3).
The comments were expressed during the portion of the meeting set aside for community announcements.
Members lauded the efforts of fellow councilor Darius Gregory, the town's only black elected to town-wide office.
"When people say 'All Lives Matter' as a response to 'Black Lives Matter,' it's like saying when we had the most recent fire on North Washington Street the fire department should spray down all the houses in North Attleboro even though only one house was on fire because all houses matter," councilor Gregory said.
"Yes, your house matters too but your house in not on fire; in fact, to put out that fire last week it required mutual aid and a collaboration between surrounding towns to neutralize that fire. I strongly believe that's what it's going to take to dismantle racism, a joint effort and mutual aid to enhance the quality of life for all," Gregory added.
