NORTH ATTLEBORO - A mall staple known for ear-piercing and jewelry accessories will close its Emerald Square mall store, but the one in Wrentham will remain open, according to the latest court filings by Claire’s stores.
The filings come after the retailer aimed at tween and teen girls announced last month that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a second time.
In recent court filings, Claire’s laid out hundreds of stores that would be closing as part of the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.
Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported in Monday’s edition that last week’s filing lists an updated version of its closing stores list, which includes 285 locations with six in Massachusetts.
The store in the Emerald Square mall, as well as ones in Berlin, Boston, Cambridge, Northborough and Peabody are slated to close.
The one at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, along with those in Auburn, Braintree, Brockton, Burlington, Holyoke, Hyannis, Lee, Natick, North Darmouth and Saugus will remain open, according to court documents.
Claire’s said in an August 6 release that it initiated voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings to “maximize the value of its business.”
The company added it will continue “an active and comprehensive review of strategic alternatives, including discussions with potential strategic partners that began prior to the filings.”
Claire’s CEO Chris Cramer called the decision a “difficult” but “necessary” one in a statement.
The state of the mall was one of the topics discussed when Michael Borg visited the North TV news set Wednesday for a recording of his monthly Town Manager’s Report.
He told North TV he doesn’t want to see the town’s top taxpayer fail, but realizes the hands of town officials are tied in making the mall make improvements or transition into a more vibrant facility.
