ATTLEBORO – It took two late free throws from Senior Guard Adam Drummond, but Bishop Feehan extended its winning streak to 9 with a 54-53 nail biting win over St. Mary’s Lynn.
The Shamrocks used unselfish half court ball movement and lights out shooting from the perimeter to build up a double-digit lead going into the second half.
Feehan had a lead as large as 18 in the third quarter, but a very young Spartans roster would not quit. One of their few veterans, senior guard Sammy Batista (24 points), took over the game late in the third quarter and spurred the visitors into a one point lead late in the fourth.
After a timeout from Coach Dean O’Connor, the Shamrocks got the ball in the hands of Drummond (8 points), who beat his defender off the dribble and drew a foul while going up for the layup. The two freebies re-established Feehan’s lead with 3.2 seconds left.
A buzzer-beating runner from Batista bounced off the side of the rim, confirming Feehan’s one point victory.
Senior guard Michael Hutchins knocked down three 3 pointers, including one late in the second half to stem a St. Mary’s run. His 13 points lead the way for the Shamrocks and his sharp shooting effort earned him the distinction of being named North TV’s Player of the Game.
Other scorers for the home team were Charlie Olson (10 points), Eric Nelson (9 points), Billy Oram (9 points) and Yden Boucicaut (5 points).
Monday’s matchup inside the McIntyre Gymnasium was the first between the Catholic Central League foes and set up what will be a competitive rivalry between the two accomplished programs.
