NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Sun Chronicle reported on a story Friday morning that is certain to spark debate on social media
A book was removed from the Martin Elementary school library after a parent asked for the action, Superintendent John Antonucci told the newsapaper.
The book, “Woke: A Young Poet’s Call to Justice,” is a collection of poems by women of color aimed to inspire children to stay aware of issues and become a new generation of activists. He added the book has been removed from circulation, so it’s no longer available to students, but teachers can still access it.
“It was not removed outright,” he said.
The Boston Globe reported this week that North Attleboro was one of just five districts across the commonwealth to have removed a book.
The decision to remove “Woke” was made by a committee made up of a principal, librarian, the elementary curriculum coordinator, a teacher and a parent.
The committee found the title was “unnecessarily divisive,” Antonucci said and the decision was not based on the content of the book.
