Plainville sets new dates for town meeting and election

PLAINVILLE, MA – While neighboring towns like North Attleboro no longer hold town meetings, Plainville does and the challenge of when to have dozens of residents assembled to approve articles was addressed during Monday night’s virtual meeting of the board of selectmen.

The annual town meeting, which approves the budget for the fiscal year that begins on July 1, was originally scheduled for the traditional date of the first Monday in June - June 1. Selectmen approved rescheduling the meeting three weeks to Monday, June 22.

Plainville’s annual town meeting will be cablecast live on North TV’s Plainville Channel: Comcast channel 8.

Selectmen also approved a new date for the annual town election, which had been scheduled for April 6.

The board followed the recommendations of Town Clerk Ellen Robertson to hold the election on Monday, June 29 with reduced hours. The polls at town hall and the public safety building will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 8 p.m.

Cleaning of booths and the markers used for the ballots will take place between the two sessions.

There is one lone contested race: Christopher Desprez and Selectman Stanley Widak are seeking a three-year term on the board of selectmen. Widak won a special election in April of last year to fill the one-year unexpired term of George Sutherland when resigned to pursue a new work opportunity.

North TV will be working with town officials on plans to hold a debate and will cablecast live election results the night of June 29.
