PLAINVILLE - Voters on Monday overwhelmingly rejected a request by the town’s board of selectmen to increase property taxes above the limits of Proposition 2 1/2.
It was the second time in a little more than nine months residents said no to an override request.
Monday’s $1.95 million request was defeated 933 to 591. The vote equates to 61.22 percent against to only 38.78 in favor.
A larger $3.25 million override was rejected in June by a smaller margin with 1,449 or 58.95 percent in opposition to 1,030 or 58.95 in support of the question.
The only contested race on the ballot was for one seat on the planning board.
Christopher Desprez defeated fire chief Justin Alexander 719 to 636.
Desprez and Alexander joined North TV’s live election night coverage; the former thanked his supporters and explained why he might have been the voters’ choice.
Selectmen Brian Kelly and Jeff Johnson also spoke on the live show. Both men were obviously disappointed by the defeat of the proposed override.
The first meeting of selectmen after Monday's vote will be held virtually this Monday night, April 12 at 7 o’clock.
That meeting will be cablecast live on North TV’s Plainville Channel: Comcast channel 8 and streamed live on northtv.net.
