Pulling 'Woke' awakens residents

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The school committee met for the first time since The Boston Globe disclosed the district was one of only five in the state to pull a book off of a library shelf.

The decision to remove “Woke: A Young Poet’s Call to Justice” from circulation in the Martin Elementary School library was made in May of last year by a committee made up of a principal, librarian, the elementary curriculum coordinator, a teacher and a parent after another parent complained about the book’s content.

Although school committee members knew about the decision, it was never disclosed during the open session of their June or subsequent meetings.

The book, the decision to pull it and then putting it back on the library shelf after public outrage was addressed at the start of Tuesday’s meeting, held in the middle school cafetorium.
