NORTH ATTLEBORO - Footage of multiple thieves pillaging stores have been a common scene on national newscasts over the last year.
Unfortunately, the disturbing trend hit home Tuesday night when two women and a man entered the Macy’s store at Emerald Square Mall, went to the perfume section, and dropped bottles of perfume into bags.
WJAR-TV, channel 10, reported the thieves got away with thousands of dollars’ worth of perfumes and colognes.
Police said surveillance video recorded the thieves as they grabbed 25 boxes of fragrances worth about $3,200 off store shelves and slipped out a door.
Police added the store manager told them he recognized the three people from two previous unreported shoplifting incidents.
Police said the thieves got into a Nissan Altima with Rhode Island license plates and drove toward Attleboro.
Investigators said they don’t know the shoplifters’ name.
The Retailers Association of Massachusetts said it is seeing an increase in thefts and in many cases, companies tell their employees not to intervene. “Somebody that has been hired to work at a cash register should not be interfering with these types of activities. They have been growingly, more violent, more confrontational, and more aggressive,” Ryan Kearney said.
